Headstand/Salamba Shirshasana
Sirsasana, Shirshasana, Sirshasana (Sanskrit: शीर्-ासन; IAST: Ś"rṣāsana), or Headstand, is an asana.

Headstand Yoga Pose, Supported Headstand.
Salambhasana, Shalabasana
Locust Yoga Pose.

Headstands and shoulder stands loosen and stretch many of the muscles that regulate breathing and promote blood flow. As such, these particular poses were important to Iyengar and continue to have a large presence in Iyengar yoga.

Headstand Pose (sir-shah-sa-na) Sirsha-asana - The Sanskrit word sirsha means head. This posture is the well-known headstand posture, and perhaps second only to the padma-asana or lotus posture, is widely identified with the practice of Yoga.

The Headstand (Shirshasana)

This posture may look like imposing to those who haven't attempted it. Nevertheless, it is an extremely powerful asana. It is called the "king of asanas" because of its overall effect on the whole body.

Salamba Sirsasana or Supported Headstand is said to be the "king" of all asanas. As with all inversions it reverses the flow of prana which can lead to self-realization.

Sirshasana (headstand) and sarvangasana (shoulder stand) are not advisable during menstruation, but vajrasana, shashankasana, majariasana and abdominal breathing in shavasana help to relieve cramp.

Cole's sequence of postures begins with Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward dog), Uttanasana with head support (standing forward bend), short Adho Mukha Vrksasana (handstand) as preparation for Salamba Sirsasana (headstand).

Women should avoid topsy-turvy and headstand poses during the period of menstruation.
