Violence (himsa) can be of three types: Krta (Harming others directly); Karita (Harming others indirectly) and anumodita (Supporting an act of violence). ...

We cannot avoid himsa. What we can do is to understand the inherent nature of ahimsa. Through this understanding, we can be aware of all our thoughts, actions and words and start to manage them.

In anekāntavāda, there is no "battle of ideas", because this is considered to be a form of intellectual himsa or violence, leading quite logically to physical violence and war.

The commentator Vyasa says that this last state of yama is attained when one remains totally detached from sensual pleasures of all kinds and so effectively refrains from committing himsa or violence of any sort.
