PANCHA INDRIYAS (submitted by: yogitonmoy)
Pancha means five and Indriyas means the five senses organs. So these are five senses organs. Followings are the five senses organs and their foods: 1) The eyes - like to see 2) The nose likes to smell 3) ...

[edit] 5 Indriyas
The Five Indriyas, or 5 senses are:
Sparshana Indriya - Sense of touch
Rasana Indriya - Sense of taste
Ghrana Indriya - Sense of smelling
Chakshu Indriya - Sense of seeing
Karna or Shrotra Indriya - Sense of hearing ...

These five mentioned are called senses of knowledge - Jnanya Indriyas. They are so called because they give us some sort of knowledge - either of sight, or sound, or taste, or smell, or touch.

In the broad sense it means control of the senses or indriyas. More specifically it refers to celibacy or chastity. Like all traditional spiritual traditions, yoga advocates restraining from indulging in sensual gratification.

We may not perceive him through our "indriyas" (sense-organs) , but that does not mean his presence is not there.

Patanjali tells us that tapas eliminates impurities and cleanses and strengthens the Indriyas (the organs of perception), which include the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, and mind.

KARMA-INDRIYAS: Organs of action - tongue, hands, feet, genital organ and anus.
KARMA-KANDI: One who observes strictly the duties ordained in the scriptures.
KARMASRAYA: Receptacle of actions.
KARUNA: Compassion
KASHAYA: Hidden desires.

Indriyas are deceiving you at every moment. Pleasure mixed with pain, sorrow, fear, sin, diseases is no pleasure at all. The happiness that depends upon perishable objects is no happiness. If your wife dies, you weep.

Discipline the Indriyas and mind. Do Sadhana. When you become old, it will be difficult for you to do any rigid Sadhana.

Needless to say, mastery over Bhutas and Indriyas (explained in previous sutras) bring mastery over NATURE, the Prakrti, itself. And, of course, ultimate mastery for a man is to transcend the realm of Prakrti and be FREE! ...

The functions of the intellect and ten Indriyas cease entirely. The aspirant rests now in Atman. There is no distinction between subject and object. The world and the pairs of opposites vanish completely. This is a state beyond all relativity.

It requires long practice and careful watch over the mind and Indriyas. Foolish people hastily jump up to the higher courses in Yoga in vain without having this important item which is very useful for spiritual Sadhana.
