Kriya Yoga is an integral Yoga, a union of Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. Kriya Yoga is a scientific technique of meditation, which brings all-round development to a person.

Kriya Yoga is a technique of energy control. Likewise, it consists of a number of yogic techniques that hasten the practitioner's spiritual development and help bring out a profound state of tranquility and God-communion with one's own self.

The term kriya yoga is also popularly used in ways that will seem so bizarre as to make you laugh, or in other ways so strange as to raise eyebrows in perplexity.

2. Chapter 2 deals with Kriya Yoga and explains the means of attaining Samadhi. (Kriya Yoga is Tapa-svadhyaya-Ishvara-pranidhanani = Discipline (training of the senses for self discipline and purificaion), Self Study, Surrender to God.

Action, activity, as kriya yoga - a path of action. In hatha and kundalini yoga, kriya refers to certain pranayama and cleansing techniques; in Patanjali's system of yoga, it refers to the practice of austerity, self-study, and surrender to God.

This type of Yoga has become famous across the world. Kriya Yoga forms a subsection of this Yoga. Kundalini Yoga is an advanced practice of Kriya Yoga and is not recommended for ordinary enthusiasts.

This trick, from Edward Vilga's book Yoga for Suits, is adapted from the Kriya yoga system. "Kriya techniques are like doing crossword puzzles. They keep you alert enough to pay close attention to goings on but they are also pacifying," Vilga says.

Kshaya: Destruction; annihilation.
Kshetra: Field; source.
Kshina: Powerless.
Kumbhaka: Retention of breath.
