Padmasana - Yoga Lotus Pose
In this lesson you will learn how to do the lotus pose. The lotus pose is the most popular sitting position in yoga. You basically fold your legs, keep your back straight and relax your arms.

LOTUS POSE - ONCE YOU'RE IN IT
1 Once you've crossed your legs, lean forward slightly and wriggle the buttock backward until you are on the frontal edge of each sitting bone. You are now in extreme dog tilt.

Lotus Pose (Padmasana)

This is probably the most well known pose routinely used by Budha and is a very popular meditation pose. This is not always easy for Westerners to master.

The lotus pose begins by sitting on a small pillow, with both knees comfortably bent.

Be in the lotus pose. Then lie down on your back while keeping the legs folded in lotus form. After making the spine, neck and head fall on the floor completely, let the thighs also fall down.

Padmasana (Lotus Pose)
This is also known by the name Kamalasana. Kamala means lotus. When the Asana is demonstrated it presents the appearance of a lotus in a way. Hence the name Padmasana.

Padmasana (Lotus Pose)
Amongst the four poses prescribed for Japa and Dhyana, Padmasana comes foremost. It is the best Asana for contemplation. Rishis like Gheranda, Sandilya, speak very highly of this vital Asana.

Sit on Padmasana (lotus pose), Siddhasana (adept's pose) or Sukhasana (any pose you like) for your Japa and meditation for half an hour, facing east or north. Increase the period gradually to three hours.

Sit in padmasana (lotus pose) or siddhasana (perfect pose) with your spine upright and straight. Close your eyes. Inhale through the left nostril; exhale through the left. Do five or ten rounds and then change nostrils. This is the first stage.

The half lotus pose helps in increasing flexibility of the knees and hips. It also strengthens the knee, hip muscles. Intense stretch of the spine during the forward bending releases accumulated stresses around lumbar spine.

These stretches can be done before, during and after stretching in Half Lotus (the cross legged pose above) or full Lotus pose.

Is meditating in Padmasana (Lotus Pose) inadvisable if I get pins and needles in my legs after 15 minutes? Also, I'm not interested in Indian scriptures but would like to read about raja yoga.

There are many benefits of the Yoga Lotus Pose. Here are a few:
It can facilitate relaxation of the body. Hence, enhancing concentration and ultimately achieving meditation.
It can create a natural balance through the body and mind.

Meditative asanas - Asanas like Padmasana (Lotus pose), Siddhasana (Perfect pose), Swastikasana ( Auspicious pose) Vajrasan (thunderbolt pose), samasana (balance pose) etc are called as meditative asanas.

As we sit in the Lotus pose, we can explore our unique map to greater awareness from our specific Earthly existence - the family we were born into, the circumstances that shaped us, the conditioning of culture - to the Divine.

Lotus Position: Padmasana, or Lotus Pose, named so because the position puts the souls of the feet up, reminiscent of a lotus flower. The prime position for meditation, it is the most renowned of all Hatha Yoga postures.
Maha: meaning Great.

Come to the variation of bridge with one leg in the lotus pose.
Hold for 6 breaths then do the other side.
Take the legs together and hold the arch for 10 breaths.

Sit in either Easy or Lotus Pose, whichever you find the most comfortable.
