manas: the faculty of doubt and volition, sometimes translated as "mind" to refer to the lower or instinctive mind, seat of desire and governor of sensory and motor organs. Manas is termed the undisciplined, empirical mind.

Manas: the mind or the thinking that one liberates with a mantra (manas trayate).
Mandara: the golden mountain used for churning the ocean in the fight between the s u r a s and the a s u r a s (see 8.5, 6 & 7).

Manas, the sense-mind, perceives objects and reacts. Mind is a servant, not a master of the self. If the self through its buddhi determines that it would like a woman to think of a man, then this is what the woman's mind will do.

In striving to penetrate the deepest arcane meaning of the sacred texts, Mimansa thinkers accepted the four pramanas or modes of knowledge set forth in Nyaya, and added two others: arthapatti or postulation, and abhava or negation and non-existence.

The internal psyche, which we generally call Manas or mind in ordinary language, has four functions. In Sanskrit these four functions are designated as Manas, Buddhi, Ahamkara and Chitta.

When a perfect union takes place between Prana and Apana, Manas and Buddhi or Jivatman and Paramatman without opposition, it is called Ghata Avastha. He may now practise only for about one-fourth of the period prescribed for the practice before.

The Manas or subconscious element is supervised by the Prana energy this is the high cadre psychological capacity of the brain. It is known as the heart of the head where higher psychical activities are carried out.
