Muni ("he who is silent"): a sage .
Murty : (lit., embodiment; figure; image) A representation of God or of a chosen deity that has been sanctified and enlivened by worship.

He was a friend of Agastya Muni. He came from Kailas and stayed in Varanasi. Then he went to Chidambaram and Tiruvavaduturai and other places near Madras. He worshipped Lord Siva in the temple at Tiruvavaduturai and stayed there for some time.

Manasa Devi is the daughter of Kasyapa Muni and the disciple of Lord Shankara. She is therefore highly learned in all matters pertaining to the shastras and is the presiding deity of all the mantras.

This Brahmavarta desha, glorified in the Manu Smriti, between the Ganga and the Yamuna, wherein is this Sivananda Ashram, is a blessed spot; and Muni-ki-reti is thrice blessed - the land of the munis.

Lord Shiva was so stirred by the short dance sequence that was presented that he asked his disciple Tandu to instruct Bharat, a sage, in the art of dance. Bharat Muni wrote the famous treatise on Dance and the performing arts called the Natya ...

Ganapati Muni (Ramana's disciple) wrote on the connection between the Vedas and Tantra.
In more modern times, this work has been continued by Pandit Vamadeva Shastri (David Frawley) especially in his book Tantra Yoga and the Wisdom Goddesses.
