Nirodha, restraint, cessation or interception, is essential to sanyama because it is concerned neither with different states nor objects of consciousness, but chiefly with the process of transformation or replacement of the contents of consciousness.

Nirodha comes from the root rudh which means to 'obstruct", the prefix "ni" literally means lowness or downward motions. Nirodha means not just restraint of thoughts but to obstruct thoughts of lower nature.

cittavrttinirodha [control of the cittavrttis], the conquest of all the movements of the mind. [Yogasutra 1.2]
citti the Knowledge; the truthperceiving conscious vision and knowledge.
citti acitti the Knowledge and the Ignorance. [cf. the following] ...

"Yogaschitta vritti nirodhah"
This yoga means withdrawing the extrovert tendencies of mind from mundane objects, making them introvert and merging them with the basic background of mind.

NIRODHA: Control or restraint.
NIRVANA: Liberation; final emancipation.
NIRVIKALPA-SAMADHI: Superconscious state where there is no modification of the mind or Triputi.

Classical Definitions: __ YUJYATE ANENA ITI YOGAH ( Dictionary meaning) that which unites in yoga __ YOGAH CHITTA-VRTTI-NIRODHAH ( Patanjali) yoga is the cessation of vrttis(modifications) of mind.

YOGASCHITTAAVRITI NIRODHA. Yogshutra,samadhipaad, shutra-2. Chitta and vrities are the two aspects of humankind. But Yoga calls us to kill the vrities and live only with Chitt.

The result or benefit of 'Nirodha ksana cittanvaya' is the peaceful flow of the mind. The mind flows peacefully or in other words peace flows into the mind.

The definition of Yoga is "the controlling of the mind" [citta vrtti nirodhah] (Jois 2003 10). The first two steps toward controlling the mind are the perfection of yama and niyama (Jois 2003 10).

2: Yogas citta-vrtti-nirodhaha - Yoga is a practice of stilling the fluctuations of the mind. From my understanding, yoga is a discipline to help us to break away from determinism and exercise a free will, living our lives to our maximum potential.

As defined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras (YS 1:2) Yoga chitta vritta nirodhah. Yoga is cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.

Nirbija: Seedless (without Samskaras).
Nirmana: Created.
Nirodha: Restraint; suppression.
Nirvichara: Without argumentation.
Nitya: Eternal.
Nivritti: Removal.
Niyama: Observance, the second step of Raja Yoga.
