NIYAMAS
In part one of this article (in the January issue) the five yamas were discussed. Now come the five niyamas.

 


Niyamas:
The niyamas are the second constituents of Ashtanga Yoga. How we interact with ourselves, our internal world. The niyamas are about self-regulation-helping us maintain a positive environment in which to grow.

The Five Niyamas of Yoga
The second limb of Patanjali's eight-limbed yoga system contains the five internal practices of Niyama (observance).

Niyamas are the second of the eight limbs of yoga according to Patanjali and they comprise the "shall-do" in our dealings with the inner world.

Niyamas. In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali defined five niyamas or observances relating to inner discipline and responsibility. They are purity, contentment, self-discipline, study of the sacred text, and living with the awareness of God.

Niyamas. Personal,inner discipline and responsibility. Purity, contentment, self-discipline, The study one's self and living with the awareness, surrendering all thoughts and actions to God.

Saucha: Cleanliness or Purification (of body and mind)
Tapas: Heat, Focus
Svadyaya: Self-Study
Santosha: Contentment
Ishvara Pranidhana: Surrender (to something higher than one's Self) ...

The Five Niyamas
Saucha
Saucha is purity. The deepest and most subtle aspect of Saucha is purity of thoughts and feelings.

For example, if one practices Asanas and Pranayamas one will automatically gain the effects of Yamas and Niyamas. Similarly, the latter four parts are also interconnected as one leads to the other.

Niyamas: The second stage or limb of yoga as defined by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras and is a collection of five observances or personal disciplines.

This is the reason why, in the Yoga Shastra, asana comes as a stage after yamas and niyamas. No yoga scripture says that first of all you must do asana only.

The observance of such Niyamas is for your advancement in the spiritual path and you will not be spiritually benefited by giving publicity to your Sadhana.

Like the five yamas, the Niyamas are not exercises or actions to be simply studied. They represent far more than an attitude. Compared with the yamas, the Niyamas are more intimate and personal. They refer to the attitude we adopt toward ourselves.

And there is an elaborate moral code (the yamas and niyamas) that, while not uniformly espoused or understood, is widely studied and promulgated.

I'm not going to get into a discussion of the Yamas and Niyamas here, since sites and works devoted to these broad topics abound.

First let's examine a text known as the Hatha Yoga Pradipka, a classic hatha yoga texts. As with the more commonly known Yoga Sutras of Patanjali we find the yama and niyamas.

Asana practice must be established for proper practice of pranayama and is a key to the development of the yamas and niyamas.

It also outlines eight limbs of yoga: the yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), asana (postures), pranayama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), dharana (concentration), dhyani (meditation), and samadhi (absorption).
