Padma-asana - The Lotus Posture
Translation:
The Sanskrit word padma means lotus. Besides the obvious reference to the similarity of the folded legs to lotus petals, the lotus hold special significance in reference to Yoga and Meditation.

2. Siddhasana (The Perfect Pose)
Next to Padmasana comes Siddhasana in importance. Some eulogise this Asana as even superior to Padmasana for purposes of Dhyana. If you get mastery over this Asana, you will acquire many Siddhis.

Ardha Padmasana is the Half Lotus
Sit on a blanket and bend a leg close to your body and set it down with your knee on the blanket. Pick up your other leg and place it on the top of the first.

This is probably the most well known pose routinely used by Budha and is a very popular meditation pose. This is not always easy for Westerners to master.

PADMASANA
Padma means a lotus. A man sitting in this posture looks as if he is sitting on a lotus. The pose is also known as Kamalasana in the science of Yoga. Spread a blanket on the ground and sit with legs extended.

Padmasana: This is the best asana for those really interested in meditation on the spiritual plane. Recommended for everybody.

Padma: lotus, the flower of the lotus plant Nelumbium Speciosum that closes at night; often confused with the waterlilly Nymphaea Alba, related to it.
- Indication of spiritual purity.

Padmasana (Lotus Pose)
This is also known by the name Kamalasana. Kamala means lotus. When the Asana is demonstrated it presents the appearance of a lotus in a way. Hence the name Padmasana.

Patanjali: lit. "possessed of reverence." A Saivite Natha siddha who lived sometime between about 200 B.C.E. and 200 C.E., but the exact date is unknown.

Padma: Lotus; lotus flower. Another name for the chakras, because sometimes they are visualized as spoked wheels, and at other times as lotus flowers.

Procedure
Inhale, and exhailing set both the palms near the belly below the navel resting on the heels of the legs. Keep the right hand palm on the left hand palm. Keep the fingers quite together.

Sit on Padmasana (lotus pose), Siddhasana (adept's pose) or Sukhasana (any pose you like) for your Japa and meditation for half an hour, facing east or north. Increase the period gradually to three hours.

Rest the right foot on the left thigh, near the hip joint, and the left foot on the right thigh, near the hip joint as well. Clench the jaws. Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth.

In my hierarchy of poses I consider Padmasana, Lotus Pose, the most important. Shavasana. Relaxation Pose (see page 295 of Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving Into Stillness), is second, and everything else comes after that.

Sit with one leg relaxed on the floor and the foot tucked into the groin, the other leg crossed on top with the foot resting on the thigh beneath.
Keep the spine lengthened and the face soft.

Method
Stand erect; as you inhale bring the right leg up to half lotus position trying to place the heel in the abdomen beside the navel.

There is the Padmasana, there is the Sirshasana and there is every other kind of Asana.

If you cannot do siddhasana, sit in padmasana. The yogi then seals off all the upper apertures. First, the ear holes are closed by putting the thumbs in the ears. Keep your back straight.

  When sitting in a chair, whenever possible fold your legs up and sit in Sukhasana or Ardha Padmasana.

They are Padmasana, Siddhasana, Svastikasana and Sukhasana. You must be able to sit in any one of these four Asanas at a stretch for full three hours without shaking the body. Then only you will get Asana-Jaya, mastery over the Asana.

Asanas such as Halasana, Sarvangasana, Sirshasana and Padmasana should be avoided, as these should only be attempted by experts. These asanas can place a lot of strain on your joints and discs. In time, this could lead to very serious lesions.

There are two methods of doing this asana. One is folding or turning back the head and neck area combined with the lotus posture (Padma Asana). The second easier method is without the lotus posture and can be practiced by any person.

Headstand Pose (sir-shah-sa-na) Sirsha-asana - The Sanskrit word sirsha means head. This posture is the well-known headstand posture, and perhaps second only to the padma-asana or lotus posture, is widely identified with the practice of Yoga.
