Paramahamsa (परमहंस), also spelled paramahansa or paramhansa, is a Sanskrit religio-theological title of honor applied to Hindu spiritual teachers of lofty status who are regarded as having attained enlightenment.

Paramhansa Yogananda brought these two teachings together into a harmonious whole. He explained that we should use Òour own, but God-given powerÓ. God, in other words, doesn't do all the work for us, but neither can we do it all alone.

The Absorption In Paramatman

As, according to Vedanta, the latter proposition is affirmed, Yoga is that process by which the identity of the two (Jivatman and Paramatman)"which identity ever exists, in fact"is realised by the Yogin or practitioner of Yoga.

When a perfect union takes place between Prana and Apana, Manas and Buddhi or Jivatman and Paramatman without opposition, it is called Ghata Avastha. He may now practise only for about one-fourth of the period prescribed for the practice before.
