Samasthiti - Sama means 'upright' or 'erect', and sthiti means 'steadiness'. This is the basic standing pose in yoga classes, and the starting position for most of the standing postures.

From Samasthiti, inhale place left hand on waist and with the right hand catch the right big toe. If possible straighten both knees and spine (if not possible to straighten right knee then hold toe with knee bent).

Jana yoga vyavasthiti: steadfastness in seeking wisdom and practicing yoga
jiva: living being or life. The individual soul, which in essence is one with the Universal Soul.

Srishti (creation) sthiti (preservation) samhara (destruction) tirdhana (veiling) and anugraha (blessing) are all the action of Prakriti. We then realise that whatever is seen in this universe is the outcome of consequences, i.e. parinam swaroop.

This posture is also known by the name samasthiti-asana. Sama means unmoved, equilibrium, and sthiti means standing upright or firmly, abiding, remaining, thus samasthiti means standing firmly without moving.

When the teacher says samasthiti (same state) it means return to the basic standing position.
