Sushumna

Yoga Sushruta SamhitaSushumna nadi

Sushumna is the most important of all the Nadis. It is the sustainer of the universe and the path of the universe and the path of salvation.

Sushumna
Passes through the spinal column, originating in the Muladhara Chakra and terminating in the Sahasrara Chakra, diving in an anterior and posterior branch before reaching the Ajna Chakra.

Sushumna also emanates from the sacro-coccygeal plexus along with ida and pingala, but instead of spiralling upwards, it follows a straight course, piercing all the main plexuses.

Sushumna nadi, the central channel around which the two other nadi "revolve", is the royal path that may lead us to the experience of the ultimate state of consciousness and may lead tour transformation.

sushumna nadi: Sanskrit word meaning the pranic channel between the ida and pingala which goes up from the bottom of the spine.
sutra: Sanskrit word meaning thread or link; aphorisms, as in Patañjali's Yoga Sutras.

Sushumna Nadi
When we study the construction, location and function of the Spinal Cord and the Sushumna Nadi, we can readily say that the Spinal Cord was called Sushumna Nadi by the Yogins of yore.

When the sushumna nadi in the spinal column is made active by pranayama and by certain other processes prescribed in Hatha Yoga, then alone can we get rid of the bondage of matter. By such practices, a Yogi makes his sushumna nadi active.
