The Sutras are here brief to obscurity; only a few words, for example, are given to the great triune mystery and illusion of Time; a phrase or two indicates the sweep of some universal law.

The sutras then discuss the powerful effects of maintaining ethical discipline and religious observances. It again notes that from surrender of oneself to God (Ishvara Pranidhana) comes the attainment of Samadhi, the last stage of yoga.

Yoga Sutra defines asana as that which is comfortable and easy, as well as firm. It is a dynamic position, in which the practitioner is perfectly poised between activity and non-activity, being doing and "being done by" the posture.

The Patanjali Yoga Sutras is a unique reference book and a classic for the stundent of yoga and the spiritual seeker.

Why I am saying all this is that one aphorism in the Brahma Sutras is very intriguing, which no commentator has explained properly.

Sutra Literally, thread. A rule or aphorism, often intended for memorization.

Sutra ("thread"): Aphorism; a condensed and cryptic statement that usually can be understood only through commentary. In India, the major points of an entire philosophical system may be expressed in a series of sutras.

Sutra: The Sanskrit word sutra literally means "thread" but it also means an idea expressed as a concise, clear statement. The sutra texts, express a variety of world views.

The Yoga Sutra describes what happens when these five behaviors outlined above become part of a person's daily life. For example, if we become kind and considerate, our presence will create pleasant and friendly feelings in people around us.

The Yoga Sutra says success in yoga comes from abhyasa and vairagya: dedicated practice and letting go. Practice both.

His Yoga Sutras espouse a threefold system for attainment of samadhi through tapas (austerities; discipline; literally "heat"), swadhyaya (self-study) and ishwar-pranidhana (contemplation of God).

Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga:- In Sanskrit "Ashta + anga" is Ashtanga. "Ashta" means Eight and "Anga" is limbs so it means Eight Limb path, ashtanga yoga is based on Yoga Philosophy of Patanjali.

The metaphor of a sutra will serve you well in your approach to Urdhva Hastasana: It is a pose that requires a resolution of literal and hidden forces, and the less one elaborates, the more it reveals.

You will find in Vedanta Sutras: For the same reason, breath is Brahman. Prana is the sum total of all energy that is manifest in the universe. It is the sum total of all the forces in nature.

In order to place the doctrines of the Upanishad in an organized form, Rishi Badarayana composed the Brahmasutra. On the Brahmasutra of Badarayana, Nimbarka was one of the five principal commentators.

The real ground breaking characteristic of Yoga-Sutra however, is its precept of philosophical dualism. Patanjali believed that separation of the matter (prakriti) and spirit (purusha) were necessary to cleanse the spirit to absolute purity.

He was the author of ‘Atma Vilas', ‘Brahma Sutras' and various other works. Once he was in Samadhi. The floods in the Cauveri river covered him up with mud. For some months his body remained buried underneath the earth.

The Indian sage Pantajali, in his Yoga sutras defines yoga as the control of activities of ones minds. Yoga is founded on the belief of the progress of self awareness.

The results obtained by Sutraneti are better than those of Jalaneti. However Sutraneti is not so simple as Jalaneti. Of course it is not difficult at all. After a lot of experience Sutraneti is easily handled.

Yama and Niyama are the ethical precepts set forth in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras as the first and second of the eight limbs of yoga.   They are the foundation of our practice without which no spiritual progress along the path of yoga can be made.

On the other hand, there are ancient yogic texts (most notably, Patanjali's Yoga Sutra) that many regard as scriptures, revelations of truth and wisdom meant to guide the lives of yogis down through the ages.

The main credit for systematizing yoga goes to Patanjali who wrote 'Yoga Sutra', two thousand Years ago. He described the principles of the full eight fold yogic discipline. He composed the treatise in brief code words known as 'Sutras'.

In the 1st Pada, 13th sutra of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, he states "Tatra Shitau Yatno Bhyasah." This means that if you remain steady in your efforts and vigilant in your practice, you will improve.

In his famous Yoga Sutra, Patanjali says that each posture reflects a mental attitude, whether that attitude be one of surrender, or the strengthening of the will or the creation of a physical prayer with the body.

Some of us, including me, were reading book 2 of the Sutras of Patanjali and I started accompanying the readings with morning line drawings of my hands and feet along with some random thoughts and the sutra for that day.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali instructs one in contemplating the meaning of Om as a direct path to enlightenment.

The classical yoga writings, the Yoga Sutras, were compiled in the second century B.C. by Patanjali, who described yoga as having eight major parts, sometimes referred to as the eight limbs of yoga.

It is not only a daily exercise sequence but, as Barbara Stoller Miller writes in her translation of the Yoga- Sutra, "The goal of yogic transformation is realized in contemplative practice.

Patanjali defined the entire system of Yoga in Yoga Sutra I.2: Yogas citta-vrtti-nirodhaha - Yoga is a practice of stilling the fluctuations of the mind.

Raja Yoga is the path of Yoga that focuses on meditation and contemplation. It is based on the Eight Limbs of Yoga which was discussed in the Yoga Sutra. The Yoga Sutras are built on a foundation of Samkhya philosophy and the Bhagavad Gita.

The fundamental hypothesis of the Yoga Sutras is that our body and the mind are part of the continuum of existence. However, the mind, it is admitted, is subtler than the body.

For a vedantin the best scriptures are the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras. There are also many other scriptures such as the Puranas, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, etc.

His notion of the physical body is similar to the refrain in the Prajnaparamita Sutra: "All this is empty, void, " the notion being that in the void a thought arises and then assumes a physical body, and having assumed the body, ...

He should realise the oneness of the microcosm with the Virat Atman and others, upto the Turiya, of the macrocosm, also of the Linga with the Sutratman, of the Self with the unmanifested state, ...
