Swadhyaya is the study of the Self through chanting and recitation of sacred texts. Through maintaining focus on the text, our capacity for concentration increases.

Swadhyaya
Swadhyaya literally means study of the Self. The main practice is the study of the yogic scriptures but it also includes japa (mantra repetition). Not any yoga or spiritual book qualifies as proper material for swadhyaya.

Swadhyaya (Self Study):
Ishwar gita while describing swadhyaya has stated that japa is swadhyaya. It includes both shrawan and manan (listening and contemplation). Japa is of two types, oral and mental.

Self study, study of the Self, study by oneself, constant japa of the mantra received from a teacher, contemplating the meaning of the mahavakyas, the great sentences of the Upanishads.

Swadhyaya: The Art of Self-education; contemplation and study that leads to self-realization. The contemplation on the knowledge offered in teachings and scriptures and an ongoing observation of one self and the activity of the mind.

SWADHYAYA:
The study of the Self; the regular disciplined practice of chanting and reciting spiritual texts such as the Guru Gita.
SWAMI:
A term of respectful address for a sannyasi, or monk.

His Yoga Sutras espouse a threefold system for attainment of samadhi through tapas (austerities; discipline; literally "heat"), swadhyaya (self-study) and ishwar-pranidhana (contemplation of God).

That is the reason why Upanishad declares, "Swadhyayanama pramadita yam". Do not delay self-study for the delay also it is said that "Pramaado nityamrityuh" laziness or delay is equivalent to darkness and death.

Students chant Sanskrit mantras which can either be Nama Sankirtana (chants that consist of short Sanskrit phrases, typically names of God) or swadhyaya (chanting of longer texts).
