Tamasic Foods

Yoga TamasicTanmatra

Tamasic Foods: Foods that contribute to lethargy, laziness, and inactivity. They are thought to decrease motivation and purpose, and are associated with depression. Overeating is also considered tamasic.

Tamasic foods such as beef, wine, garlic and onions, and also tobacco, he explained, 'fill the mind with anger, darkness and inertia' and are unwholesome and unfit for those who seek spiritual and moral growth.

Static foods or tamasic foods are foods whose consumption, according to Yoga, are harmful to either mind or body. Harm to mind includes anything that will lead to a duller, less refined state of consciousness.

To reduce tamas avoid tamasic foods, over sleeping, over eating, inactivity, passivity and fearful situations. Tamasic foods include heavy meats, and foods that are spoiled, chemically treated, processed or refined.
