Inhale through the left nostril repeating the Bija Yö (Tham) 16 times. Retain the breath till you repeat the Bija (Tham) 64 times.
The word 'hatha' itself is a composition of two syllables or bija mantras known as 'ham' and 'tham'. 'Ham' represents prana, the life force. 'Tham' represents chitta, the totality of the mind- conscious, subconscious and unconscious states.
In the next round of the cycle, inhale through the left nostril while repeating the mantra "tham." This is pronounced with the same hard "t" sound as the "tha" in 'Hatha yoga'.
The name UlagAriya (or Lokacharya) first became associated with Sri Nampillai when Sri Kanthadai Thozhappar celebrated him as the acharya for the world ("kanthAdai thOzhappar tham ugappAl enna ulagAriyanO enRu uraikka").
