The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali - Chapter 3
One-pointedness is steadfastness of the mind.
Unbroken continuation of that mental ability is meditation.

The Yoga Sutras provide a practical philosophy and an applied science of life with all the necessary concomitant processes, tools and techniques.

The Yoga Sutras of Lord Patanjali distinguish between mental disciplines required to still the mind [given in chapter 1] and physical discipline [given in chapter 2].

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the oldest textbook of the Yoga school. It is four chapters of approx. 200 verses teaching us how to attain Yoga (union with our Divine Nature).
1. Chapter 1 deals with the nature and aims of Samadhi.

The Yoga Sutras are built on a foundation of Samkhya philosophy and are generally seen as the practice while Samkhya is the theory.

According to the Yoga Sutras, the ultimate aim of Yoga is to reach "Kaivalya" (freedom). This is the experience of one's innermost being or "soul" (the Purusa).

First we will explore the Yoga sutras of Patanjali. Patanjali was not the author of the sutras that comprise the eight-limbed system of yoga called ashtanga[i].

This question is deeply studied in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which is a master technique of yoga practice. Does it mean that meditation is thinking some object? Everybody is meditating.

After the Bhagavad Gita, the next seminal work on Yoga is the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Compiled by Maharishi Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras, the Eight Limbs of Yoga are a progressive series of steps or disciplines which purify the body and mind, ultimately leading the Yogi (one who practices Yoga) to enlightenment.

One basic assumption of the Yoga Sutras is that the body and the mind are part of one continuum of existence, the mind being more subtle than the body. This is the foundation of the yogic view of health.

The third kind of Pranayama that is described in Sutra 50 of the Yoga Sutras, is practised only till the first Udghata is marked. This fourth Pranayama is carried further.

Ashtanga Yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras.

The basis of ashtanga yoga is the Yoga sutras (Sanskrit Verses) of Patanjali. We will consider the different aspects of yoga while remaining under the guiding principles of Patanjali's Yoga (Ashtanga Yoga).

The classical yoga writings, the Yoga Sutras, were compiled in the second century B.C. by Patanjali, who described yoga as having eight major parts, sometimes referred to as the eight limbs of yoga.

Yama: Moral precepts that have universal application. In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali defined five yamas of moral conduct. They are: nonviolence, truth and honesty; not stealing, moderation and non-possessiveness.

It was compiled and systematically co-coordinated by mahashi Patanjali in his classical work, the Yoga Sutras, which consists of 185 terse aphorisms. So Mahashi Patanjali is regarded as the pro-founder of Yoga Philosophy.

Surrender to God. One of the components of the path of kriya yoga as outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. However, according to bhakti yoga, surrender to God alone can lead one to the highest state of realisation.
