The Tree Pose
This pose harnesses the powers of mental concentration, while allowing you to calm the mind. It develops balance and stability, and strengthens the legs and feet, also increasing flexibility in the hips and knees.

The Tree Pose (Vriksha-asana) Instruction:

Step by Step
Stand in Tadasana. Shift your weight slightly onto the left foot, keeping the inner foot firm to the floor, and bend your right knee. Reach down with your right hand and clasp your right ankle.

Tree Pose (Tadasana)
The Tree Pose helps strengthen your thighs, calves, ankles and back. It can also increase the flexibility of your hips and groin. Your balance and concentration can also be improved with constant practice.

Tree Pose has three lines of energy. One line reaches up the arms, one line moves down the supporting leg, and one line stretches outward through the bent knee. Your center will be in cat tilt.

A tree is always in a standing position, remains stable and grows upward. The similar process is involved in this asana and hence it is called Vrikshasana.

Tree Pose / Vrksasana
From Tadasana (1), stand on one leg, place the other foot in the inner ankle, knee or thigh. Open the bent knee to the side. Try to raise the arms and balance. Keep your gaze steady on a stationary point. Breathe.

Beginner's Tips:
Try the pose with your back against the wall. This will help if you feel unsteady. Raise the bent leg maintaining awareness of the contact between the standing leg's buttock and the wall.

Just as a tree is a mirrored reflection of itself and the Guru is a mirrored reflection of our Self, so can this balancing inversion act as our mirror and teacher, showing us our tendencies and fears and how to overcome them.

When we say, "a tree exists", we think that the tree is the substance and "exists" is the predicate of the sentence. The subject is always regarded as superior to the predicate.

The mind of such a person is said to be likened to a monkey that goes from tree to tree tasting a piece of fruit from each and then dropping it and moving on to the next tree. As with many of us, our thought process runs in much the same way.

The foundation of a tree is its roots therefore bring awareness to the feet first in this yoga pose. The same force should be present in both feet. Pelvic adjustments must be made to achieve this. Evenly distribute the weight over the feet.
