A technical term meaning a modification of the mind. An idea or thought complex.

Vritti : Fluctuation or movement of the mind; thought.

Witness : The transcendental Consciousness that lies at the root of the mind and from which the mind can be observed.

Vritti: livelihood, conduct, character, treatment, inclination, functioning, appearing (see e.g.: 10.85: 45 and also the Vedabase on the different use of this word, and 12.7: 13).

Samasthiti - Sama means 'upright' or 'erect', and sthiti means 'steadiness'. This is the basic standing pose in yoga classes, and the starting position for most of the standing postures.

When a Vritti subsides it leaves a definite impression in the subconscious mind. It is known as Samskara or latent impression. The sum total of all Samskaras is known as "Karmasaya" or receptacle of works.

Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.

but for your kind information, I have to say that these two (Chitta and Vritties) are not two elements. They are same or two aspects of same thing(humankind).Chitta and vrities are as same as day and night, darkness and light.

They are called kalpita vritti and akalpita vritti. Kalpita vritti means imagining something as existing. Imagination also is a function of the mind.

In his work called the "Yoga Sutras" he says, "Yoga is the control of the vrittis of the mind". The vrittis are waves or modifications such as thoughts, memories, and emotions.

but ultimate mental purity is to get rid of all the vrittis, to go into deep silence transcending both good as well as bad thoughts.

Within yoga we actually see a similar teaching "Yogas Chitta Vritti Nirodha" Yoga Sutras of Patanjali B.1 s.2, Yoga is restraint of thought in the field of the mind. Here is an apparent paradox and basis for the misunderstanding.

While trying to control the vrittis (thoughts, emotions, feelings), certain disturbances are created which stop or divert the growth. Patanjali has addressed them as " Antaray(Disturbances) creating chitta vikshepa". These are described as under: ...

Very much like the wind creates the motion of the leaves, prana creates the motion of the mind which gives rise to the vrittis. Air is the primary physical medium of prana and breathing is our best method to gain control over the prana.

'Yogaschitta vrittinirodhah.' This is the highest aspect of Yoga as mind is fickle. 'Oh Ram; Mind roams about in all directions. How it can be fixed in one place? So far as this mind remains fickle, restless, disturbed, Jiva will not be at ease.

They at once jump to awaken the Kundalini and raise Brahmakara Vritti. They will only break their legs. Those who attempt to awaken the Kundalini by Asanas and Pranayama, should have purity in thought, word and deed.

When we work so hard to stir up our vrittis or mind stuff, to awaken the kundalini force within, it is optimal to allow the body and mind to rest, and for the kundalini, prana and chitti or consciousness to rest and settle in our other energy fields.
